6,300 city students join hands to collect 300 kg of e-waste

Within a few months after we buy a new phone, there’s a newer version of the same in the market tempting us all with newer features. We give the recently bought phone a rest, leave it behind at home, and switch to the latest one. The e-waste that most of our homes are filled with have a huge impact on the environment if simply tossed into the garbage bins.

In an attempt to address the issue of e-waste, a social enterprise founded with a mission to solve the waste management issue, has tied up with city schools to turn students into eco-warriors. Through their five-month-long Karo Sambhav School Programme, which began last year, as many as 6,300 students (studying in Classes 5 to 10) from 21 schools across the city, have joined hands to collect 300 kg of e-waste till date.

Making use of the programme’s tool kit, the participating students reached out to nearby communities to collect their e-waste. The initiative also involved the parents and other stakeholders to raise awareness on the need to dispose e-waste responsibly. The founder of Karo Sambhav Pranshu Singhal says, “The school programme is aimed at creating awareness and driving long-term behavioural change among students to tackle the issue of e-waste at the ground level. Students are the building blocks for the society, and therefore, the programme aims at inspiring them to adopt preventive environmental strategies in their daily lives.” The school teachers say the initiative helped students and communities learn about e-waste management.
