When contacted, dean of the medical college R Suganthy said that the girl, pursuing medicine in China, returned to her native at Kanniyakumari recently and got admitted to the medical college hospital around 11.30 am on Wednesday. Though she has no symptoms of Coronavirus, she is suffering fromsore throat.

The student hasn’t complained of breathing difficulty, which is one of the key symptoms of the infection. However, various tests as per guidelines of the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine were done. Doctors collected a blood sample and swab from the patient and sent it to a lab in Chennai. The test report is expected in a day or two.

Further, the dean said that there were no cases of Coronavirus or people with similar symptoms reported in the district. With all necessary medical care such as isolation ward and quarantine ward in place at the Government Medical College Hospital, doctors are ready.

While four beds are ready in the isolation ward, eight beds have been arranged in the quarantine ward to treat any suspected cases. More importantly, ventilator facilities are also available in these special wards. Isolation wards have been set up at government hospitals in Kuzhithurai and Padmanabhapuram, too. Three medical teams had been set up to monitor the situation, the dean concluded.
