Investigation revealed that a leak in the pump transferring naphtha, a by-product of petroleum, caused the fire around 4.35 am. As the emergency alarm went off, the workers rushed to the safe zones. Since the safety personnel of the CPCL could not control the fire, the fire control room was alerted. Fire tenders from Manali, Tiruvottiyur and Ambattur rushed to the spot and doused the fire after a battle that lasted for two hours.

A case has been registered and an investigation has been initiated to ascertain the reason for the leak.
