According to the complaint, Manimekalai alleged that her husband Elumalai, an auto-rickshaw driver, was involved in a road accident on January 3, 2013. He collided with a two-wheeler driven by one Thameem Ansari. She submitted that she was forced to pay Rs 2,000 to Thameem and the C2 Elephant Gate police demanded Rs 5,000 or threatened to foist a false case against him.

She said that she gave Rs 600 to the police officials and left with her husband. On the following day, the police secured her husband. After some time, she got a phone call from her husband’s phone that he was admitted to KMC with burns. Later he died.

Officials at the C2 Elephant Gate police station denied the allegations that they committed human rights violation.

Jayachandran, SHRC member, said, “The compensation should be paid within four weeks.”
