4 cows rescued from illegal slaughterhouse in Tiruvallur

Despite strict regulations in place, illegal slaughterhouses continue to flourish in the city outskirts after four cows were rescued in Tiruvallur district and handed over to an animal rescue shelter on Monday. This is the second incident taking place in the month.

“For quite some time, we kept getting information that cows and calves were being illegally slaughtered on Tirupachur Road in Tiruvallur. When we spotted the place, we found four cattle were tied up and it was a horrible sight to see the pregnant cows lying dead in a pool of blood. We were able to rescue two calves and two cows,” said Sai Vignesh, founder of Almighty Animal Care Trust. He also added that a complaint was filed at the nearby police station and action was taken immediately. “When we questioned them on calves, the people at the butcher shop said that they own the calves and cannot give them away,” saidSai Vignesh.

According to the Tamil Nadu Animal Preservation Act, cows, bulls and bullocks should not be slaughtered. However, many illegal slaughterhouses exist in the city especially in north Chennai. No steps are taken against this issue though it is banned in Tamil Nadu, activists pointed.

“On January 20, we rescued five cattle including a pregnant cow at a slaughterhouse in Tiruvallur and this is repeated. Whenever we come across any slaughterhouses or get information, we immediately rescue them. However, we don’t know how to find a permanent solution to this issue, he said and added that so far more than 20 calves from the illegal slaughterhouses were rescued. “We have also filed a petition in the court regarding this issue,”said Vignesh.
