IRTT to conduct month-long awareness programme on Tamil culture across State

In order to promote the use of Tamil words and spread the fading form of ancient Tamil architecture, folk and dance forms among students, the alumni of Institute of Road Transport and Technology, (IRTT) Erode will conduct a month-long, State-wide cultural contest for school and college students.

“The intrusion of mobile phones among youngsters has made the younger generation to depend on English prose and the foreign culture has deeply penetrated into the lives of current generation,” said G Sampath Kumar, president, IRTT Alumni Association. He also added that the objective of the event is to create awareness on Tamil literature and reduce the cultural divide among the school students. To attract the students and participants, the alumni which comprises engineers from various State government departments and professionals have sponsored free international tours and the air tickets would be borne by the organisers, said Sampath Kumar said. The contest would be for elocution, folk dance, architectural painting and Tamil poetry. A contest to discuss the Tamil architecture through painting is also scheduled and about 150 judges would monitor and the event would have finals by the third week of February.


The alumni association had also embarked on a native tree planting programme at National Highway toll plazas. Saplings that are beyond ten feet height are selected and volunteers are arranged to take care of the saplings until they mature into a tree. The growth saplings would be documented to ensure a higher survival rate.


An IRRT statement said 8 cities including, Chennai, has been selected to cover all the 37 districts and the participants can enrol by visiting www.irttalumni.org or reach out through 919500500650. The event will start in Chennai on Sunday at Panimalar Engineering College, Poonamallee.
