The arrested were identified as Marimuthu (34), Senthil Kumar (30), Boopathiraja (27) and Jayavijayan (30). Earlier on Monday night, the toll plaza manager had filed a complaint with the Chengalpattu Taluk police station that Rs 18 lakh which was in his cabin was looted during the clash and he also submitted CCTV footage in connection with the incident.

The police, with the help of the footage, then identified Marimuthu who was staying in Pullipakkam village near Paranur. During the incident on Saturday, all the four of them were returning from office in Salem, the police said.

During the subsequent clash, they noticed that nobody was in the manager’s cabin and looted the money, later stated to be Rs 1.3 lakh, in the cabin drawer and escaped from the spot.

They then went to the house they were staying in and dug a pit at the backyard and kept the money in it. During police interrogation, Marimuthu reportedly accepted to committing the robbery and based on the details given by him, three others were arrested.

Meanwhile, the manager informed the cash amounting to Rs 18 lakh which was said to be looted was there inside the locker and that the manager had not noticed the money, the district Superintendent of Police said. He added that hereafter, there will be more policemen on duty near the Panarur toll plaza to prevent such incidents in the future.
