TNPCB training prog on waste management held

“After the implementation of plastic ban in the State, earlier there would be more plastic items lying on the street which would be difficult for the sanitary workers to collect it and dispose of it. In many areas, the residents collect the plastic items from their locality and burn it which causes many health risks. After this initiative, we have stopped coming across such issues,” said S Palanisamy, Director of Town Panchayats.

“Public still use plastic items, we have taken this to the notice of Chief Minister’s notice. Seizure of banned plastics along with fines need to be levied scrupulously,” he added. A presentation on the achievement of a litter-free town which was adjudged as best in solid waste management in South India was shown during the session.

Justice Dr P Jyothimani, Chairman, State Monitoring Committee of National Green Tribunal for Solid Waste Management said, “If there is door to door collection and segregation of waste, there won’t be issues like roadside dumping causing health issues for public and animals. All town panchayats should achieve zero-landfill in each of their local bodies.” The official also said that these accolades were achieved due to support from residents for door-to-door collection of segregated waste and implementation of related programs by the civic body. 

Speakers from Ultratech Cement explained on the disposal of non-recyclable plastic waste for co-incineration in cement kilns for which all towns and municipalities need to take effort to send plastic wastes to cement industries.
