The XVII Additional Sessions Judge, Chennai, on Thursday sentenced four persons for 10 years in rigorous imprisonment (RI) for attempting to murder an auto driver on August 24, 2012.

Judge S Tasneem who presided over the court, also fined Rs 5,000 each to all four convicts, and in case of default, they would have to undergo one year in simple imprisonment.


According to the prosecution, a two-wheeler that Pushparaj was riding brushed against Kalaiarasan, who was crossing the road at MGR Nagar in Besant Nagar. When the duo got into an argument, Jeevarathinam (32), an auto driver who was at the nearby auto stand, mediated.


Angered over the incident, Pushparaj went home and returned to the spot with his friends in search of Kalaiarasan. As Kalaiarasan was nowhere to be found, the group stabbed Jeevarathinam repeatedly on his stomach and left him in the pool of blood, the prosecution said.


The victim was taken to Government Royapettah Hospital and his confessions led to the arrest. The accused – P Pushaparaj, M Kathir alias Katheresan, M Thalabathi alias Bharath and K Jaisan – were found guilty under section 307 of the Indian Penal Code and 235(2) to undergo RI.
