All four are classmates aged 14 and 15, hailing from different areas in and around Avadi. They had left for school in uniform around 9.30 am on Monday.

As they failed to return home in the evening as usual, their parents initially searched for them in the neighbourhood. After their efforts were proven futile, they lodged a complaint at Avadi police station around 9.30 pm.

Initial enquiries revealed that the girls had gathered at the home of one of them, and changed to casual dress and left the premises.

The parents told the police that they did not notice anything amiss during Pongal holidays, adding that their daughters appeared as usual. They added that they did not scold or beat the children. Now police suspect that the girls might have gone out of town on their own and have launched a hunt for them. Separate cases have been filed and further investigation is on, officials said.
