Vehicles piled up at the toll plazas in Paranur and Chengalpattu for a few kilometres. According to sources, around 50,000 vehicles cross the Paranur toll plaza on normal days. But till evening on Sunday, more than one lakh vehicles crossed the toll plaza.

Due to this, the motorists took more than three hours to reach Tambaram from Chengalpattu on Sunday night, which usually takes only about an hour.

There were vehicles moving bumper to bumper at Guduvanchery and Vandalur where the flyover construction work is under way. The private buses, which were asked to proceed through the Outer Ring Road, went through Perungalathur route, which affected traffic on GST Road. Making matters worse, the buses halted in the road to enable passengers to get down, which blocked the way for other vehicles.

The people stuck in traffic alleged that there were not enough traffic police personnel to bring the situation under control. The motorists added that the authorities should have placed more police personnel at areas like Perungalathur and Guduvanchery on Monday so that the congestion could be relieved.
