Five persons drowned and another is missing in separate incidents in and around the city on Sunday.

An engineering graduate drowned on Sunday evening when he was swimming in the sea off Besant Nagar. His relative who was with him remains untraced.  S Narasimha (22) of Mannargudi had come to the city to attend an ISRO interview. His cousin V Gokul (21) who is missing is pursuing engineering at a city college, the police said. They had gone to Elliot’s Beach on Sunday afternoon along with another relative, Aravind Samy of Okkiyam Thoraipakkam, and a friend Arul Kumar. 
While they were swimming, Gokul and Narasimha were sucked in by a giant wave. Though people at the beach managed to get hold of Narasimha, he died by the time an ambulance reached. The Sastri Nagar police registered a case and launched a search for Gokul. At Pulicat, Vignesh (28) from Kasimedu, who had gone for fishing with his friends on Sunday night, allegedly slipped and fell into the sea. His friends searched for him but in vain. His body washed ashore on Monday morning. The Tirupalaivanam police retrieved the body and sent it to Ponneri Government Hospital.  
In the second incident at Pulicat, the private firm employee drowning while swimming. His friends rushed to Ponneri Government Hospital, from where he was shifted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. But doctors declared him brought dead.  At Kanathur, Mohammed Ismail (15), a Class 10 student, drowned in the sea on Sunday evening. He had gone with four friends to the beach. His body was sent to a hospital for autopsy. The Kanathur police have registered a case.  A 27-year-old mechanic drowned after falling into the Krishna canal in Tirumullaivoyal on Sunday. The Fire and Rescue personnel launched a search operation immediately, but his body surfaced only on Monday morning. The Avadi Tank Factory police are investigating the incident.
