The transformation of the schools would include revamping of infrastructure, creating digital and experience infrastructure, teacher training and skill up-gradation, extracurricular activities and soft skills, introduction of smart pedagogy and evaluation method.

The Greater Chennai Corporation has decided to implement the project at a cost of Rs 85.72 crore. “Apart from preparing the detailed project report, the project management consultant would conduct the feasibility studies in the schools and suggest the amount that could be spent on each school, considering the overall project cost,” an official said.

The civic body has won the amount in the City Investments to Innovate, Integrate and Sustain (CITIIS) Challenge conducted by the French Development Agency (AFD). The proposal was selected among the top 12 projects in the country.

The official added that the physical infrastructure includes language labs, rooftop horticulture and green campus. Apart from this, the selected schools would have smart classrooms and the civic body would provide tablets for all the students studying in the selected schools and teachers for e-learning. “As part of green campus project, the schools would be provided with intensive water harvesting, solar energy taps and others to make the schools environmentally sustainable and carbon neutral in 5 to 7 years,” the official said.

The detailed project report would also suggest the methodology to promote collaboration with the private sector and NGOs to enable school adoption by private sector under corporate social responsibility fund.
