When a plea moved by K Amanullah Khan of Royapettah citing the pathetic condition prevailing in the hospital came up for hearing before it, a division bench comprising Justice M Sathyanarayanan and Justice R Hemalatha directed the director to maintain hygienic and sanitary condition inside the hospital.

The bench pointed out that it was the children from poor families who are treated at the hospital. “Therefore, it is their duty to maintain healthy and sanitary condition inside the hospital also,” the bench said.

The petitioner had sought for a direction to the Corporation authorities to remove garbage bins placed at the entrance of the hospital immediately so as to keep hospital surroundings clean and hygienic. The move would also benefit the pedestrians in and around the hospital.

Khan had further submitted that right in front of the children’s hospital as well as inside the campus of the hospital, three garbage bins are found overflowing. These bins are leaking, leading to insanitary and health hazard conditions outside the hospital.

He also submitted that a representation that he had given in this regard on November 25 had failed to invoke any response from the authorities. Based on this, he sought the court for appropriate orders.

But, based on the assurances from the counsel appearing for the Corporation that good quality garbage bins would be replaced and regular clearance of the same would be done, the bench directed the counsel appearing for the hospital to file a status report on February 27 of both the Health Department secretary, and the director of the hospital, with supporting documents and photographs.
