Residents want new sluice gate for Retteri lake

Residents of Kolathur claimed that they have lost a lot of rain water this year as the Water Resources Department (WRD) of the PWD has not yet reconstructed the sluice gate and weir (used to control the flow rates of rivers during heavy rainfall) at the Retteri lake, which was damaged during the Vardah cyclone.

“We received sufficient rainfall this year and the lake reached its full capacity. But, as the sluice gate and the weir were damaged, a lot of the water flowed out and flooded the locality,” said Sivalingam R, a resident of Venkateshwara Nagar, 5th street in Kolathur.

“If it was reconstructed, it would have able to store rainwater, which would have increased the storage capacity of the lake and recharged the groundwater level,” he added. Sivalingam added that the residents had faced water crises for the last two years and the lake is the only source for water for them.

“We have filed many complaintsand officials have also visited thelake and conducted a survey, but nothing has changed,” said Veerasekar K, another resident.

When DT Next contacted Palanisamy, an Executive Engineer of WRD, he said, “The government is yet to release funds for the construction of the sluice gate and the weir, but it should arrive soon.”
