The police said the man reached the hostel at West Mogappair on a two-wheeler on Friday evening. “He claimed that a Wi-Fi booster in the locality had burst due to poor signal from the network providers, and offered to check the Wi-Fi connection at the hostel,” said police.

Believing him, hostel authorities let him inside. After acting like he was checking the Wi-Fi connection, he asked for three mobile phones to check the signal strength. When three hostellers, Rekha, Vani and Latha, gave him their phones, he came to the ground floor of the building citing weak signal. Before the women could realise what was happened, he escaped on his two-wheeler. The hostel authorities tried to chase him, but the thief managed to flee the spot.

Based on their complaint, the Nolambur police registered a case and have launched a hunt for him. They are trying to identify him with the help of CCTV footage retrieved from the locality and also to trace the bike’s registration number.

In a similar incident, a woman was relieved of her mobile phone by an unidentified person, who diverted her attention claiming to offer a free top-up at Pulianthope.

The victim, S Rossy of Manali, works at a private medical clinic in Pulianthope where the incident happened on Friday evening, said the police. A man in his 40s who reached the clinic struck up a conversation with her claiming to be a staff of a network provider. He reportedly told her that he got a new package which offered free calls for three months.

Believing him, Rossy gave her the phone. The man then cited poor signal inside the clinic and stepped out. As he did not return for a long time, she went out to look for him but could not find him anywhere in the vicinity. After finding that her mobile phone was switched off, she realised that she was conned. She lodged a complaint at Pulianthope police station. The police have launched a hunt forthe suspect.
