Among cities with more than 10 lakh population, Chennai has been relegated to 43rd rank during the second quarter of 2019 from 38th rank that it had managed to secure in the first quarter. The results were released on December 31.
Apart from Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore have also managed to find a place in the first 49 ranks. Both these cities have been placed in a higher position than Chennai during the two quarters. During the first quarter, Madurai has been placed at 27th place while Coimbatore is placed at 31st spot. Similarly, during the second quarter ranking, Madurai and Coimbatore are placed at 32nd and 34th spots respectively.
Indore in Madhya Pradesh has been placed at the top spot in both the quarters.
The Ministry is conducting Swachh Survekshan League in three quarters (April-June, July-September and October-December) with the objective of sustaining the on-ground performance of cities along with periodic monitoring. The performance in the league is crucial to the ranking of the cities in Swachh Survekshan 2020 due to the 25 per cent weightage of the quarterly assessments to be included in the annual survey. The survey is scheduled to commence from January 4 to 31.
Among the cities with a population between one lakh to 10 lakh, Tiruchy and Thanjavur secured 38th and 48th rank respectively during the first quarter. Also, Salem (77), Vellore (83), Tambaram (84) and Pallavaram (91) also found places in the top 100 list in the category.
Like Chennai, other smaller cities also registered a slump during the second quarter, as Tiruchy has been placed at 56th spot. Only another local body that found a place among top 100 is Pallavaram. The southern suburban of Chennai managed to secure 76th place.
Of the total 3,971 local bodies that participated in the league, Chennai secured 1,745th place in the first quarter and 1,943rd place in the second.
In the Swachh Survekshan 2019 ranking list, the Chennai Corporation had secured 61st rank leapfrogging 39 spots. During the previous ranking, the city was placed at 100th position.
