    Cops to deploy drones, road safety squads for New Year celebrations

    Sparing no efforts for the safety of revellers, especially women, during New Year celebrations, the city police said 25 road safety squads would patrol on two-wheelers to reach people in need of help.

    For better surveillance, all-terrain vehicles (ATV) would be used on the beaches, and drones at road junctions. “Mini trucks would be made into temporary patrol vehicles with flickering lights and public announcement system to prevent crimes against women,” said the police in a statement. Speaking to the media, Additional Commissioner (Traffic) A Arun said driving licences of those caught for drunk driving would be recommended for suspension.

    About 15,000 personnel would be deployed to provide security to revellers gathering in public places across the city to usher in the New Year, and 368 temporary check posts would be set up to conduct vehicle checks. Kamarajar Salai as well as the service road at Marina beach would be closed for vehicles from 8 pm on Tuesday till 4 am on Wednesday.  Anticipating a large women crowd on Marina beach, the police also have planned to conduct awareness campaign about Kavalan SOS mobile phone application.

    Around the city for just Rs 10

    On January 1, tourists visiting Chennai can go on city tour at just Rs 10 per person, announced the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC).
    Fifteen buses from TTDC head office in Chepauk would go to Island Grounds, Marina beach, Vivekananda House, Ice House, Velankanni shrine in Besant Nagar, Ashtalakshmi temple, Arupadai Murugan temple, Guindy Children’s Park, and then back to the Tourism department office. The buses will start at 9 am and will return at 6 pm. The most convenient aspect is that the tourists can board and alight the buses at any point. Meanwhile, the Metro Rail will extend services till 1 am on Wednesday morning.
