Kausalya (name changed), aged 29, a beautician from Narasingapuram near Sembarambakkam, boarded a share autorickshaw near Mappedu Road junction near Tiruvallur on Thursday night to return home after visiting a client.

However, instead of proceeding towards Narasingapuram, the autorikchaw moved towards Kadambattur.

When the woman asked the driver to stop the vehicle, two other men in the auto threatened her and tried to misbehave with her. When she cried for help, five men — Yagesh, Esther Premkumar, Vinith, Franklin and Charlie — who were going in four two-wheelers in the same direction heard her and chased the auto.

Near Kadambathur, Yagesh managed to overtake the auto and stopped his bike in front of the vehicle. However, the auto driver knocked him down without stopping the vehicle. Meanwhile, the woman jumped off the autorickshaw and escaped from the gang.

Both the woman and Yagesh were rushed to Tiruvallur Government Hospital and Yagesh was shifted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. However, he succumbed to the injuries on Saturday night.

The Mappedu police, who had earlier registered an assault-cum-kidnap case against the suspect, have included murder charges and have launched a hunt for the trio. The police, after preliminary inquiries, said that since the woman, who is married, often visited Mappedu, the gang might have kept a watch on her and hatched a plan to abduct her. The identities of the suspects remain unknown and the police are expected to probe the case further after the local body elections.
