“The wet waste collected from wards 187 and 188 in Perungudi zone are being composted at a facility in Pallikaranai dumping yard. Using the organic manure generated from the facility, we are doing organic farming on 2,000 sqft land,” a Chennai Corporation official said.

The official added that vegetables such as lady’s finger, chillies, greens and others are being grown in the farm. Chennai Corporation workers are employed in the farm.

However, the civic body is yet to start selling the produce, as organic farming is done in smaller quantity. “We have plans to produce more organic vegetables and sell in a small way to the local residents,” the official said.

Meanwhile, the Chennai Corporation had already launched a project to supply organic manure generated from biodegradable waste to support organic farming on 30,000 acres of land in Tiruvallur district and invited farmers. The civic body is composting around 500 tonnes of biodegradable waste every day to generate manure.

The civic body is also selling organic manure to the residents at Rs 20 per kg and has recently started to sell manure through WhatsApp messages. The residents who require organic manure have to send messages to 9445194802 to place the order. In another initiative, the civic body had recently started selling organic manure at city malls.
