Oppn leader among 8,000 booked for anti-CAA rally

A day after the DMK held a rally against the Citizenship Amendment Act at Egmore, police on Tuesday booked the party president and Leader of Opposition MK Stalin and 8,000 other participants under three sections.

Police said that cases have been registered against Stalin and other leaders under Sections 143 (punishment for unlawful assembly), 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 341 (Punishment for wrongful restraint) and City Police Act.

Party workers of DMK and its allies led by Stalin and accompanied by Congress leader P Chidambaram, VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan, CPM state unit secretary K Balakrishnan, DMK youth wing leader Udhayanidhi Stalin and TMMK leader MH Jawahirullah went on a rally from Thalamuthu Natarajan Maligai at Egmore towards Rajarathinam stadium raising slogans against the CAA and NRC.  While the city police had denied permission for the protest, the Madras High Court ordered police to record the event using the drone cameras in order to make the leaders culpable in case of violence.  As many as 5,000 police personnel and two drones had been deployed to monitor the rally. 

Special court summons DMK president

Meanwhile, a special court to hear cases relating to MLAs and MPs has summoned Stalin and seven others to appear before the Court on December 26 in connection with cases filed against them for holding protests demanding setting up of Cauvery Management Board earlier.

DMK opens student wing in New Delhi 

The DMK has launched its students wing in the national capital.
This was disclosed by DMK students wing secretary and MLA Ezhilarasan, who was here in connection with the meeting of Young India Movement that strategised on how to carry forward the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act.
Ezhilarasan said currently a hostile atmosphere was being created against the students in the country.  Apart from the CAA and the NRC, the educational policy brought before that was intended to take away the rights of students.  He said, on the invitation of JNU student leader Arun Kumar, a 34-member outfit has been created in which those from Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Jammu and Kashmir are included as members.
