MoU for conservancy works to be signed today

The Greater Chennai Corporation is set to sign the Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with two private firms for the conservancy works at eleven zones in the city, on Tuesday.

According to a Chennai Corporation official, an event would be held during which the private firms, Madrid-based Urbaser SA andRamky Enviro Engineers, would sign agreements in the presence of Municipal Administration Minister SP Velumani.


After failing to get response from private firms several times, the Corporation managed to finalise Urbaser SA, a Spanish firm, to undertake the conservancy works in Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Adyar, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur zones. Ramky Enviro Engineers, which is currently involved in garbage collection at Teynampet, Kodambakkam andAdyar zones, has been selected to carry out conservancy works at Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram and Ambattur zones.


The official source added that once the MoU are signed, the private firms would be given three months to procure machinery, including garbage lorries, and create infrastructure. Under the deal, the two private firms would remove around 3,400 tonnes of garbage from the streets of the city.


After work at the eleven zones are handed over to the firms, contract staff and National Rural Livelihood Mission (NULM) conservancy workers would be absorbed by them, while the civic body’s permanent employees would be transferred to Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar and Anna Nagar zones where the civic body would continue to remove garbage.
