This has angered the rest of the people there, who alleged that the demolished drain had nothing to do with the area where there is stagnation, and complained to the officials.

According to the people who demolished the drain, they were facing trouble due to water stagnation even after a brief spell of rain. With no action forthcoming despite complaining to local officials several times, they decided to rectify the issue, the claimed.

However, the others are not amused. “Usually, residents urge officials to construct SWDs. But here, they demolished the drains in their area after flood water entered many houses in the locality. Instead of just making a hole to drain the water, the whole structure was demolished,” said Pughazhvendan, a resident of Kundrathur.

“There is no SWD in the streets where the water is stagnating. Instead of complaining to the town panchayat to drain out the water or construct a drain to avoid flooding, they have demolished the drain that is actually not connected to the area where the water stagnation is,” added Krishnaswamy P, another resident.

“We alerted the officials of Kundrathur Town Panchayat over phone and sent them a video. But they have not inspected the locality yet,” he added.

However, when contacted, the town panchayat executive officer denied having received any complaints regarding the issue. “If the incident is true, then we will take action against those who demolished the drain.”
