Adyar Cancer Institute gets Rs 89.84 crore for infra development

The upgradation of the institute is being done on a shared basis under a memorandum of understanding (MoU), wherein the central government is providing 75 per cent of the total amount required and rest 25 per cent is being provided by the State health department. 

Thus, Rs 67.38 crore will be the grants-in-aid from the Centre for the upgradation of the institute, while Rs 22.46 crore will be the State’s share.

However, the regulations on the free treatment given at the institute will be changed after the memorandum has been signed between both the governments.

The allocation was made following requests from the cancer institute administration to initiate the procurement of the equipment for upgrading the institute as the apex centre for the treatment of cancer.

The recurring cost of the upgradation will be met by the institute itself. Out of the total allotment, about 60 per cent of the cost of the upgradation was sanctioned last year.

Senior officials from the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) stated that the institute, operated as a private institution, will be the premier cancer care centre offering state-of-the-art treatment and maintain the Statewide cancer registry. 

The institute is also authorised to conduct research and train doctors and other medical staff for carrying out the treatment procedures.

“The upgradation of the Adyar Cancer Institute will include infrastructure development of the equipment and premises. The provision of free treatment to particular category is likely to be revised, as the State and Central government is contributing to the development of the centre,” said the official.
