FIRs filed against 3,837 protesters in Chennai

The Chennai police on Friday filed cases against 3,837 people for gathering without permission to protest against NRC and CAA in different parts of the city.

However, the FIRs at different police stations, have no names and only the numbers, a senior police officer said. The case was registered under two Sections - IPC 143 (unlawful assembly) and City Police Act 41(6) (gathering in huge numbers without the permission of the police).


More than 600 people, including MP Thol Thirumavalavan, actor Siddharth and musician TM Krishna had gathered at Valluvar Kottam demanding the scrapping of NRC and CAA. The cases were registered after protests were held at Valluvar Kottam, Tirumangalam, Foreshore Estate, Triplicane and Sastri Bhavanon Thursday.


According to the police, apart from Valluvar Kottam, 700 protesters from Triplicane, 1,500 from Shastri Bhavan, 1,000 at Foreshore Estate, 612 from Tirumangalam and 25 from Egmore were booked.


Police said that permissions were denied to all agitators and despite that they had carriedout protests.
