They claim that at least one case of battery theft is being reported in the neighbourhood every day — some thefts are even carried out during lunch time — but the police are yet to nab the culprits.

“Daily one or two batteries are being stolen from the parked vehicles. For the police, it is a small thing, but for us it costs more than Rs 4,000 to buy one battery,” said Kumar, whose family runs a mini-van in KK Nagar.

According to sources, the police have told them that they may not able keep an eye on the vehicles parked illegally on Anna Main Road, but the drivers still feel that the police should at least take a look at the CCTV footage from the neighbourhood to trace the suspects.

Arjunan, a driver who parks his minivan in the same area, said, “Last week I had parked my vehicle and gone out for lunch. After returning, I found that someone had stolen the vehicle’s battery.”

Another driver noted that it is quite easy to remove batteries from vans as it is fixed with only four screws near the driver’s seat.

Commenting on this, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ashok Nagar, P Radhakrishnan said that the issue has come to his notice and steps are being taken to the increase vigilance in the area.
