On the eve of Valentine’s day, Thoothukudi police have resorted to ‘Kollywood route’ to warn and advise those roadside Romeos to desist from harassing women. In a social media post, the district police used two clipping from different movies of actor Ajith, to warn the stalkers and eve-teasers.

The tweet posted by Thoothukudi district police on its Twitter handle @tuticorinpolice turned out to be an instant hit on the social media. With over 1,500 retweets and more than 2,500 likes by Wednesday evening, the reach has surprised the district police administration.
The tweet in Tamil said “following women and teasing them are punishable offences. Let us respect women”. To support this, the police had taken two clippings from Ajith movies, in which the hero talks about the need to respect women, and the need for women to walk freely without any fear of being harassed. The police had taken the clips from actor’s movies Citizen and Vedhalam. When contacted, Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police Arun Balagopalan noted that it was part of the district police effort to be pro-active on social media sites. “We are told by the higher ups also to be active on social media and we have decided to come up with this post before Valentine’s Day so that women are not harassed in the name of love,” the SP noted. He also added that every district has been told to come up with ideas to promote such messages on social media so that they reach the target audience. He also noted that the response on the social media was huge for a district like Thoothukudi.
Many Twitter users had congratulated the district police for the initiative and effectively conveying the idea in a language youngsters would understand.
