Students from various colleges in Tiruchy and adjacent districts staged a series of protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and it is also reliably learnt that they had also planned an indefinite hunger strike.


Students gathered on the premises of St Joseph’s College and staged a protest. However, police on information reached the spot and pacified them. The protesters claimed that the Centre had already started to implement the RSS ideology step by step and that the CAA would be a major blow to the minorities and peace-loving citizens.


Several institutions across delta districts witnessed protests by students against the police crackdown in Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi on Sunday night and the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).


In another incident, police stopped students of Jamal Mohamed College, when they attempted to take out a rally from their college.


Reports reaching here said a section of students of Annamalai University at Chidambaram in Cuddalore district staged a protest against the Act.


Meanwhile, the Tiruvarur police registered cases against 63 students of the Central University of Tamil Nadu for burning the effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.


The CUTN was closed for an indefinite period following students’ protest. A section of students joined the protest condemning the BJP-led NDA, the RSS and the Sangh Parivar, alleging the Act had been brought in as part of their agenda to divide the people and create a theocratic state.


Students termed the act “unconstitutional” and said the new law has omitted those who have faced worse persecution in Sri Lanka and Myanmar.


When students of MGR Arts and science college in Kollidam attempted to stage a protest, they were stopped by the staff.
