The patient Hemnath, lost his right lower limb in July this year. After visiting several private hospitals to reconstruct his leg did not provide any success, he lost his hope too.

“During examination, we found that he had a hip bone fracture and the main blood vessels supplying to his right lower limb were damaged. Due to loss of blood supply, his right lower limb had to be amputated and was sent to the Department of Plastic Surgery with an infected stump,” said Dr Jayanthi, Dean RGGGH.

In cases of an artificial limb, patients would have to remove it while sitting and has some issues while walking. Here, he can walk just like others and the patient won’t have a thought that an artificial limb is been fixed.

Doctors claimed that while the thigh bone is normally 45 cm, however in this patient, it was only 10 cm and there was frequent leakage of fluid. “We did vacuum suction to stop the fluid leak for more than five to six times. Only after the infection was stopped, we covered the stump with local flap cover. After two months, he received the prosthesis and underwent rehabilitation for ambulation. Now the patient can walk with support,” said Sridevi, Professor of Plastic Surgery. The doctors said that he was unable to even sit and thought he will not be able to do anything in the future. But with proper training in the hospital, he has gained mobility slowly and almost recovered 90 per cent.
