Police said that the detainee Arun (25), a pavement dweller of Angappan street, was secured by public when he allegedly tried to misbehave with a girl, who was asleep on the pavement. He was handed over to North Beach police who had detained him in the station with his hands locked. However, in the wee hours of Monday, he was found missing from the station.

Police suspect that he could have escaped through the back door as there was police security only at the front entrance. While a hunt was launched for him, senior police officers sought details of those personnel present at the station. Further inquiry is on.

When contacted, a senior police officer said, “Arun had both his hands cuffed and was made to sit inside the station. When police personnel took another suspect, who was detained in a different case, inside a room for an inquiry, he managed to escape within minutes. There is no doubt that there is slackness on the police’s side. CCTV footage from the station was collected for screening to verify the police personnel’s claim.” The official also added that the accused would be nabbed soon as a police team is on a hunt for him.

This is second such incident happening after a detainee escaped from Semmanchery police station, on Friday.

Police said Ashok (20) of Tsunami Nagar was detained on Friday for creating ruckus in the locality under the influence of alcohol. However, in the evening of the same day, he escaped from the station with handcuffs on even as three policemen were present at the station. A source said that they were talking to the suspect’s mother

when he fled. Police had launched a hunt for him. An officer, when contacted, said that he was arrested on the same day and remanded in judicial custody at the Central Prison in Puzhal.
