Man loses job, turns to YouTube to become ATM thief

A 32-year-old man was caught red-handed when he tried to break open an ATM at Muthapudupet on Wednesday night. He told the police he was in need of money after losing job at a private firm, adding that he learnt how to break over the kiosk by watching videos on YouTube.

During interrogation, the accused, Udaya Suriyan of Pakkam village near Tirunindravur, admitted that he looted Rs 4 lakh by breaking open another ATM in the locality in October. On Wednesday, when Suriyan entered a Punjab National Bank ATM near a private college in Muthapudupet and sprayed foam on the CCTV cameras. Observers at the bank’s central surveillance office in Mumbai on suspicion alerted Muthapudupet station. When a police team rushed to the kiosk, they found Suriyan inside the kiosk, spraying foam on the cameras. The personnel nabbed him and alerted inspector Gunasekaran. The inspector reached the spot with his team and secured him.


Suriyan, a Diploma holder, reportedly told police that he decided to loot ATM as he was in need of money after losing a job at a private firm in Gummidipoondi. On October 18 night, he managed to steal Rs 4 lakh from India1 ATM at Kavanur. But the police was not able to recover any money as he claims to have spent it. Suriyan was remanded in judicial custody.
