Civic body may set up system to streamline events at T Nagar plaza
With more performers opting to perform at newly-inaugurated the pedestrian plaza in T Nagar, the Greater Chennai Corporation is considering to set up a system to streamline the process.

Currently, the civic body allows artistes to perform on a case-by-case basis as there is no system in place. “For the time being, performers who wish to showcase their talents at the pedestrian plaza can approach the Chennai Corporation officials or local civic body engineers. The performers need police permission and our local engineers have been getting the permission on behalf of the performers,” Raj Cherubal, CEO of Chennai Smart City Limited said.
He added that the discussions are under way to appoint an event manager and to create an online registration system to simplify the process. The platform has been receiving positive response from artistes across the city. Singer and song writer MS Krsna, said, “When we performed a music event at the pedestrian plaza, the kind of support we received was unexpected. Some of the spectators they met us after the show and praised our work. It felt so good to have been able to express ourselves and be appreciated for it.”
In another move to increase the number of performances at the plaza, the civic body also has plans to merge with a UNESCO initiative, in which music events are being conducted every weekend at major city parks. UNESCO had included Chennai in its creative cities project under music category in 2017 to boost culture and art.
