    T Nagar Jewellery extortion case: Five advocates suspended

    The Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry (BCTN&P) has suspended five Chennai-based advocates involved in extorting money from the owner of Saravana Elite jewellery shop on Usman Road in T Nagar from practicing law in all courts in India. The city police arrested nine persons including the five advocates on November 13 based on a complaint lodged by the jewellery shop owner Siva Aruldurai.

    BCTN&P secretary C Raja Kumar while passing the suspension order against the five advocates—M Jagadeeshwaran of Ennore, V Sriram of Kilpauk, A Amanullah of Pudupettai, B Murugan of East Tambaram and M Sundara Pandya Raja of Kodambakkam, said the five advocates have been prohibited from practising in all courts, tribunals and other authorities in India either in their name or in any assumed names till the disposal of disciplinary proceedings pending against him.


    As per the case, one Dhanasekar, who claimed to be the vice-president of Universal Press Media, had visited the store on November 3. He had exchanged some gold coins for a three sovereign gold chain. Following this, he accused the shop of giving him a fake gold chain. Claiming to be a journalist he said he would carry the news in the media and create a negative image about the store.


    Following this, the jewellery shop owner had reportedly parted with Rs 15 lakh to Dhanasekar to refrain him from publishing any news about it. But on November 13, he returned with 14 other people and demanded Rs 1 crore saying the store was selling fake gold.


    The employees alerted the police who arrived at the spot and nabbed nine persons, while the rest managed to escape. Among the nine persons held, five of them were advocates who have beensuspended now.
