“The land in Kotturpuram is under the ownership of Greater Chennai Corporation and was recently taken into possession. It will be converted into a public park with cycle tracks, walkways and will have sports amenities,” Prakash said.
He added that as all the necessary coastal regulation zone (CRZ) clearances and the tenders would be invited immediately. The civic body, under Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust (CRRT), has a made proposal to create a park on the banks of Adyar River in Kotturpuram. As the reclaimed land is near the project area, the civic body decided to expand the park, but is yet to prepare an estimation for it. Chennai Corporation reclaimed the five–acre land from the educational institution on August 10 following a High Court order.
Apart from extending the park on the plot, the civic body also has proposed to create an urban forest near Kotturpuram MRTS station, opposite the proposed park.
“The urban forest will be created using Miyawaki method on a half an acre land parcel. Native trees will be planted in the urban forest and the work for it is already under way,” Prakash said. Compost for the Miyawaki forest would be procured from centres in south Chennai region.
