City to get 2 tmc of Krishna water from December
At a time when the intermittent showers have been slowly pushing up the storage in reservoirs that feed the city due to intermittent showers is not so encouraging, another consolation is that Chennai will be receiving another instalment of 2 tmc from Krishna river from December first week. The Water Resource Department (WRD) said that so far, the city has received 2.3 tmc this year.

“On November 11, Andhra Pradesh suspended the discharge from Krishna river to Tamil Nadu. Following this, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami wrote to the Andhra Pradesh government to release the water and they agreed to give 8 tmc. But, now only 2 TMC is expected to be released from the first week of December,” said A Palaniswamy, Executive Engineer, WRD.
While the total capacity of Poondi reservoir is 3,231 mcft, the storage on Monday stood at 1,011 mcft. Of this, 808 mcft was being released to Puzhal and Chembarampakkam lakes. “Currently, the combined storgage in all three reservoirs is 3.2 tmc,” he informed.
The reservoirs feeding the city started receiving water from the Kandaleru dam in Andhra Pradesh from September 25.
As per the agreement, the city is supposed to receive 12 tmc every year.
However, Andhra did not release a single drop from January to September. During the same month rains lashed Andhra Pradesh and this pushed up the storage in the dams there. Following this, the first instalment was released by the nieghbouring state from September 25.
“In such a situation, the chief minister’s letter has yielded results as Andhra Pradesh has agreed to release 2 tmc from December first week,” said Palaniswamy.
