Here’s why you should add sardines to your diet
If you don’t add sardines to your plate often, it is time you considered it, says chef Aji Joseph.

The chef, who was a guest judge on the popular cooking show MasterChef India, says sardines should be placed on top of the list of things that are good for one’s health. With November 24 being marked as National Sardines Day in many countries, chef Aji elaborates on the various benefits that one can reap from consuming the tiny fish.
Rich in omega-3 fatty acids
“Sardines are one of the best natural sources of omega-3 fatty acids. It’s great for your hair, skin, brain and boosts immunity — the list is almost endless,” he asserts, adding that the omega-3 fatty acids are also known for lowering cholesterol levels, thereby making it an essential ingredient for a healthy heart.
To control blood sugar levels
“These oily fish are packed with healthy fats and protein, that work towards slowing the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream. Sardines are rich in essential proteins and good fats that are vital for those with diabetes,” says the chef who was formerly the opening chef for Sera (earlier Zara) in Chennai.
For better bone health
“Sardines are a rich source of vitamin D, a nutrient that is not easily available in our regular diet, unless you consume a lot of dairy products,” adds Aji, who currently works with FreshToHome, an online market place for fish, seafood, poultry and lamb. As a great source of protein with low calorie content, sardines also aid in weight loss, he adds.
