Multi-level parking facilities in 38 locations under Smart City project soon
Parking woes may soon ease in the city as the Greater Chennai Corporation has initiated the process to construct multi-level parking facilities, mostly located close to transport termini, in as many as 38 locations in the city. In this regard, the civic body has invited consultants to prepare a detailed feasibility report for the identified locations.

According to a Corporation official, the steps for parking facilities have been taken following an announcement in the State Assembly during the Budget session in February. “In line with the announcement, 80 locations have been identified to construct multi-level parking and underground parking facilities,” the official said.
Of the 80 potential sites, the project would be taken up in a phased manner, the official said, adding that during the first phase, parking facilities would come up at 38 locations, which are mostly located close to transport termini. The comprehensive integrated parking and commercial development of the project would be implemented by Chennai Smart CityLimited (CSCL) through a public-private partnership (PPP), the official added.
The project comes at a time when civic body data shows that the metropolis has a traffic density of 2,093 vehicles per kilometre of road.
“The parking facilities will have commercial spaces that would be rented out to earn revenue. Overall, the consultant should prepare a plan for the 38 locations to accommodate around 50,000 cars at once,” the official said.
The original plan is to create off-street parking space for 2 lakh four-wheelers and 2 lakh two-wheelers. Apart from this, the civic body, under the Smart Cities Mission, is constructing a multi-level parking facility in T Nagar and another
such facility is proposed on Mahatma Gandhi Road in Nungambakkam.
The on-street parking management system under the Smart Cities Mission is also reportedly in the final stages of implementation and a smartphone application has been developed to manage parking spaceson roads.
