The waterfalls are just about 46 km from Dharmapuri and about 150 km from Kolar in Karnataka — thereby having a Kannada influence in its name as well.

Drawing its name from Kannada words hoge (smoke) and kal (rock), the place has water falling on rocks, making it appear as if smokes were being emitted, giving it the name Hogenakkal (smoking rocks). This is the region where Cauvery enters into Tamil Nadu with gushing water, as natural falls,Dharmapuri district’s website notes. The place is also termed as Marikottayam by Tamils.

It is not for no reason that the waterfalls are referred to colloquially as the ‘Niagara Falls of India’, as the breathtaking views of Cauvery leave a long-lasting impression on travellers. The boat rides through the river are one of the most sought-after experiences at this spot. During heavy rains, boat rides, however, may not be permitted by the authorities as the waterfalls get stronger in force. The bamboo coracle (parisal in Tamil) ride, with a backdrop of surrounding hills, makes for a tranquil experience away from the urban hustle-bustle.

Cauvery, being a perennial river, allows nature enthusiasts to visit Hogenakkal throughout the year, the district administration says on its website. If you ever get hungry during the coracle ride, there are several vendors rowing their boats up and down the gorge, selling snacks. The freshest of the fish caught from the river are also grilled hot on stalls set up all over the shore. Foodies can treat themselves to different kinds of fish, including kendai, keluthi, katla, robu among others. Besides the coracle trips, you can also enjoy a quick oil massage offered by locals using special oils and herbs, which are very popular among tourists.

The scenic settings allow you to click the perfect Instagram-worthy pictures as you stand on the carbonatite rocks at the waterfalls, which are said to be one of the oldest kind in the world. If you’re in the mood for some more adventure, head to the Melagiri Hills, only a few kilometres away from the waterfalls, for a thrilling trek.
