PWD awaits nod for park near Adambakkam lake
After lying neglected for more than a year, the Adambakkam lake will finally be desilted by the Public Work Department (PWD). The department is also planning to build a park near the waterbody after getting approval from the government. The work is expected to start in January, officials said.

“Every week, we ensure that the garbage and water hyacinth are cleaned from the lake. Only after that the desilting will be taken up. The permission for desilting is yet to be approved by the government but we are expecting to start the work soon,” said PWD Chief Engineer K Ashokan.
He added that a cut and the cover drain would be constructed along the road, which would join with Veerangal Odai. “The flood regulator outlet for Adambakkam lake will be constructed and connected with Veerangal Odai. The broken portion of the Odai will be repaired. We are yet to receive an order from the government,” said the official, adding that the work on removing encroachment and setting up the park will start as soon as they receive the nod from the government.
According to local residents, the lake was filled with garbage, with many persons who pass by throwing their waste into it. Initially, a group of volunteers took initiative to clean the lake every week, but there was no visible improvement despite many efforts, said Senthinathan KP, a resident of Adambakkam. “Finally, after giving many complaints, PWD and Corporation officials visited the area and began clearing the garbage dumped from the lake every week. The officials also promised they would construct park here soon,” Senthinathan KP added.
