Gold, foreign currencies worth Rs 89L seized, 3 air passengers held
The Customs Air Intelligent Unit officers seized 1.19 kg gold worth Rs 43.7 lakh and foreign currencies worth Rs 45.4 lakh and arrested three passengers at the city airport on Thursday.

A release from the Commissioner of Customs said the officers intercepted a passenger, Deepan Ashok Suthar (33), who arrived here from Dubai-Mumbai-Chennai flight, at the domestic airport. They searched him and found six cut bars of gold weighing 1.90 kg, valued at Rs 43.7 lakh. The officials seized them under the Customs Act, 1962, and arrested him.
In another seizure, the officers intercepted two passengers – Syed Ibrahim (36) of Tiruvarur and Abdul Azeez (51) of Virudhunagar – who came to board a flight to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
When their bags were opened, foreign currencies, including Euro, Pound Sterling and Australian dollars, in various denominations to the tune of Rs 45.4 lakh was found.
The money was seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, read with Foreign Exchange Management Act, 2015, and the duo was arrested. The total seizure in both the cases was valued at Rs 89 lakh. Further investigation is on.
