The deceased, VP Ramesh, a 1997 batch police personnel from Salem, was attached to the Selaiyur police station and lived with his wife Sumathi and daughters Gayathri, Monish and Keerthana in Chromepet.

Though it was his birthday on Saturday, he could not take leave due to the bandobast duty in connection with Ayodhya verdict. Since his daughters had asked him to return home before midnight to cut a cake on his birthday, he was rushing back home when he met with the accident.

From the Selaiyur police station, he went to fill fuel in his bike at Tambaram and when he came out around 12.30 am, a speeding car rammed his bike from the rear. In the impact, Ramesh was thrown off the bike and suffered grievous injuries to the head and died on the spot.

On information, the Chromepet traffic investigation police registered a case and sent the body to Chromepet Government Hospital for post-mortem examination. The car driver, Aditya (20), was secured and investigation revealed that he was pursuing engineering second-year at SRM University.

Though passers-by claimed that Aditya was racing against another car, the police refuted it. His car knocked Ramesh’s bike down and killed him on the spot. The front portion of the vehicle was damaged in the accident,” the police said. While the CCTV camera at the spot was dysfunctional, the footage retrieved from the petrol bunk was also not clear.

Aditya has been arrested for negligent driving resulting in a fatal accident and the car was also seized. Further investigation is on.
