PWD restarts Adyar river desilting works

“The desilting work will be done at the stretch of 12 km from Manapakkam to Tiruneermalai. The river bund should be 60 meters, but it is only 30 meters now. The work that was started in August was stopped temporarily due to the rain. Since there was no rain last week, the work has been resumed. After desilting is completed, the Corporation will construct a fence near the riverbed,” said K Ashokan, Chief Engineer, PWD. “We will also create storm water drains to avoid water runoff during the rain. The drains will also help in recharging the groundwater table,” he added.

According to PWD officials, the desilting works at Tiruneermalai has been completed on one side as the bridge was demolished for widening the river in January this year.

The work on the bridge connecting Tiruneermalai to Thirumudivakkam started in August but was put on hold due to the rain. As a result, the locals complained that they were forced to use the mud road across the riverbed, which is in a tattered condition and on the verge of collapsing. During the rain, public find it difficult to walk on the road, as the river gets flooded and the water flows on the road, they added.
