Now, Thozhi to help Pocso victims
The Chennai city police has deployed 70 policewomen as counsellors to help sexual assault victims in Pocso cases, under a scheme called Thozhi. The City Police Commissioner AK Viswanathan launched the scheme on Friday that is meant to render psycho-social, psychiatric counselling and all possible assistances to the victims of Pocso Act cases.

There are 35 all-women police stations in the Chennai city. Each station would have two women cops assigned for the Thozhi scheme. These two policewomen would keep a track of the Pocso victims. Apart from giving them psycho-social and psychiatric counselling, they would render all possible assistance.
An initiative by R Dhinakaran, Additional Commissioner (Law & order), North Chennai, police personnel earmarked for Thozhi scheme would be provided with a pink coloured saree and Nirbhaya logo as a mark of safety.
The police personnel in each all-women police station (AWPS) in Greater Chennai Police would visit the house of the victims of Pocso Act and rape cases periodically to render counselling and other legal assistance, including providing safety and security arrangements if they apprehend fear from the offenders.
The scheme would be carried out from the registration of case to the conclusion of the case trial in the court. Joint Commissioner (West Zone) B Vijayakumari, psychiatrist Dr Shalini, professor Andrew Sesuraj of Loyola College and Deputy Commissioner (Crime against women and children) H Jayalakshmi participated in the programme.
