No relief to Nadigar Sangam over officer appointment

Justice K Kalyanasundaram, who held a special sitting following a mention made by the counsel appearing for Nadigar Sangam, refused to intervene in the issue at this stage.

The counsel appearing for Nadigar Sangam represented by actors Vishal Krishna and Karthi Sivakumar contented that it was against the law to appoint an officer when all the cases related to the elections of the association were pending at the High Court. It was also pointed out that it was unfair on the government’s part to appoint a special officer based on the complaints of just three members from an association, which has 3,000 members.

However, the counsel appearing for the government contended that actor M Nasser, the president of the association, has assured on Thursday that they would cooperate will the special officer. He also submitted that the office-bearers cannot stay in their positions after completion of their terms and that the special officer has been appointed till the disposal of pending cases or for a term of up to one year as there is a vacuum in the leadership of Nadigar Sangam at present.

The Tamil Nadu government had on Thursday appointed PV Geetha, Assistant Inspector General of Registration, as the special officer to oversee the day-to-day workings of The South Indian Artistes’ Association, popularly known as Nadigar Sangam.

Earlier, the Registrar of Societies had temporarily called off the Nadigar Sangam polls just days before it was set to happen, based on a complaint by some members that their names were removed from the voters’ list by the panel called ‘Pandavar Ani’, led by Nasser. Following a court order, the election took place on June 23 but the results have been withheld.
