UP duo caught by jewellery staff during second theft bid
Nearly two months after a duo escaped with five sovereigns from a jewellery shop in Anna Nagar after entering the premises posing as customers, the police arrested them on Wednesday.
Chennai
The accused were identified as Amit Kumar (46) and Ganesh Soni (47) of Uttar Pradesh. Inquiries revealed that they have carried out similar thefts at several jewellery shops in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
The incident happened in September when the two men entered the Tanishq Jewellers’ showroom on the second avenue at Anna Nagar posing as customers. After making a woman staff show them all the chains kept at the rack, the duo left without purchasing anything.
When the woman was placing the jewels back, she noticed a five-sovereign chain missing and informed her supervisor. The CCTV footage were combed and the showroom manager found that the duo stole the chain after diverting the employee’s attention and kept it in their shoes before fleeing the shop.
Based on a complaint, the Anna Nagar police had registered a case. Meanwhile, the duo visited the branch of the same jewellery shop in Pallavaram and the alert staff compared their faces with the CCTV clip and secured them. They were handed over to the Pallavaram police, who in turn alerted the Anna Nagar police. The duo was remanded in judicial custody.
Meanwhile, the Tirumangalam police have arrested a trio, including a juvenile, who relieved two women of their chains in Nolambur a month ago. Among the accused, Mohan (21) and Vinayakam (19) of Padi were remanded in judicial custody and the juvenile was sent to observation home. They targeted women walking alone. The Tirumangalam police secured them during a vehicle check on Wednesday night.
