The accused, Ezhumalai, a lorry owner, was married to the deceased, Vanitha (32), for 15 years and the couple has two children.

Ezhumalai often quarrelled with Vanitha as he suspected her fidelity and on October 15, he allegedly repeatedly beat Vanitha with a puri roller. Vanitha, who suffered injuries, was treated at a hospital and discharged recently. However, Vanitha, who kept complaining of headache, suddenly collapsed and died at the house on Monday. Ezhumalai decided to conceal the death from police and took her body to his hometown in Tiruvannamalai district in a private ambulance for cremation.

However, Vanitha’s father Kuppusamy lodged a complaint with the Tiruvannamalai police alleging suspicion over his daughter’s death.

Following this, Tiruvottiyur police was alerted and Vanitha’s body was sent back to Tiruvottiyur on request. The body has been sent to Stanley Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Tiruvottiyur police have registered a case and detained Ezhumalai. They are waiting for the autopsy report to initiate further action.
