Municipality Higher Secondary School has been functioning at Rani Annamalai Nagar in Chekupattai village in Kancheepuram with more than 700 students.
Locals claimed following continuous rainfall in Kancheepuram from Tuesday night, the school campus was flooded. They pointed that sewage water had also entered the campus and the students were forced to walk through it to get to their classes.
According to the villagers, offices of the Chief Education Officer (CEO) and District Education Officer (DEO) are also inside the campus.
“We thought a holiday would be declared today because we already know about the condition of our school, but since there were no such announcements we had to go to school,” said Ravi, a student. Many students returned home after they found out the condition of the campus. Moreover, among the ones that did come to school, claimed that they could not sit in the classrooms because of a foul smell throughout the campus.
When contacted, the Kancheepuram Commissioner In-Charge K Mahendran said, “The campus was flooded with only rainwater and not drainage. We are using motors to suck the water out and are making arrangements to prevent the campus from being flooded again. Everything will be cleared in a day or two.”
