Eatery in Egmore sealed for using banned plastic items
Officials from the Greater Chennai Corporation and Food Safety Department sealed an eatery near Egmore for violating the plastics ban and serving food in an unhygienic condition.
Chennai
According to a Chennai Corporation official, the hotel owner was using banned plastic carry bags and plastic covers to pack food. “He was also using plastic bags to cover and store cooked food. Following this, we levied a penalty of Rs 1,000 for violating the plastic ban,” the official said.
Meanwhile, Food Safety Department officials, who accompanied Chennai Corporation officials, found that the eatery was maintained in an unhygienic condition.
“During the raid, we came to know that the eatery, though having a trade licence issued by the civic body, did not have a food safety licence. This is an offence and the food safety officials locked and sealed the eatery,” the official added.
Sources in the civic body said that the raid and subsequent lock and seal was a result of a fallout between a policeman and the owner of the eatery on Monday. It was said that the policeman questioned the owner about using the banned plastic bags to parcel hot food items. “To which the eatery owner responded harshly, apart from threatening the policeman,” sources said.
