Renowned nutrition and exercise science expert Rujuta Diwekar had caught the attention of all Indians a few years ago, when she said ghee was good for one’s health, contrary to the beliefs of many that it was too fatty. The nutritionist, who has worked with the likes of ace actresses Kareena Kapoor Khan and Alia Bhatt, says Deepavali must be a time to cherish homemade sweets, sans any guilt.

The 46-year-old award-winning nutritionist took to social media to share her tips on what kind of food one must consume this festive season. Here’s how she elaborates on why you must eat sweets and not chocolates this Deepavali:

    • Homemade sweets are a unique combination of pulses, millets, grains, nuts, coconut, ghee, etc. These preparations have low glycemic index and are nutrient-dense.
    • Making these sweets is a time-tested, cultural way of bringing families together and inculcating a sense of sharing, celebrating and laughing together. It is especially important to introduce our children to this whole process.
    • You can safely eat homemade sweets even if you are diabetic, have hormonal problems, are overweight, etc. What you should not eat are chocolates, cupcakes, etc.
    • Don’t substitute sugar with artificial sweeteners or stevia in your sweets. Also, don’t compensate for eating sweets by not eating regular meals or starving.
    • Deepavali comes once a year, make your favourite sweets, eat guilt-free and share with everyone to cherish the memories.
