Based on the suggestion from the Corporation Commissioner, student health ambassadors were selected from various educational institutions across the city last month to be part of the ‘Clean Chennai, Healthy Chennai’ campaign.
“We are planning to hold awareness campaigns with autorickshaws in [all] 15 zones during weekends, on diseases that occurs during monsoon and preventive steps that need to be taken. We are also planning rallies in all the zones, with the participation of 20,000 Corporation school students, to spread awareness on the prevention of mosquito-borne diseases during monsoon, against open defecation, stopping usage of plastics, preventing stagnation of sewage or clean water and on rainwater harvesting,” said Corporation Commissioner G Prakash.
The campaign started off with the message, ‘Clean homes, clean streets’ and stressed on the need for self-motivation to keep homes and the neighbourhood clean. It also requested the cooperation of the public to combat dengue.
The chosen students will hold rallies on the streets near their schools and distribute pamphlets.
